Loft Conversions

Loft conversions are an extremely efficient way to gain a huge amount of additional living space in your home without having to eat into your garden by building an extension or converting your garage, whilst at the same time adding significant value to the price of your property. Summit Builders can turn your dark, unused attic into a bright, clean, contemporary living space for you and your family. A loft conversion can provide you with a new bedroom, a large office space, a new bathroom, a children’s playroom or – depending on available space – a new internal flat in your property.

Summit Builders offer a complete loft conversion service, beginning with a free no-obligation consultation with one of our loft conversion specialists. We can then guide you through the entire design and construction process, advise on budgets, manage the project and speak to local authorities on your behalf if you require planning permission.

Summit Builders offer a huge range of energy-efficient windows and the employ the latest building and insulation technologies in all of our work. Summit Builders understand the stress and disruption building work can cause to people living in houses while loft conversion projects are in progress, so we take the utmost care on every project.

Summit Builders offer three main types of loft conversion:

Dormer Loft Conversion

A dormer conversion is the most commonly fitted type of loft conversion, as planning permission is usually not needed. Dormers are popular because they involve a simple extension to your existing roof, creating a lot more headroom and floor space and often becoming the largest room in your home. Dormer loft conversions provide conventional vertical walls and a horizontal ceiling, creating a more standard-looking room without the slanted walls usually associated with loft conversions. This style of conversion is also popular because of the ease in which they can be built onto terraced, end-of-terrace, semi-detached and detached properties.

Hip to Gable Loft Conversion

Hip to gable loft conversions are also an extremely popular type of conversion; however, they often require planning permission. Hip to gable conversions are most often built on semi-detached, detached or end-of-terrace houses where one side of the ‘hipped’ roof is extended from its slant and made into a vertical gable end, increasing headroom and living space.

Mansard Loft Conversion

Mansard conversions are also extremely popular because they create the most extra space, however, they require the most amount of construction work and will also need planning permission. Mansards have a flat roof with a back wall sloping inwards at 72°; this is because councils regard 72° as a roof rather than a wall, allowing the build to comply with planning criteria and provides the most amount of possible space. The windows in mansard loft conversions are built as small dormers, creating a very aesthetically pleasing aspect of the conversion.

Because a loft is at the top of the property, going through your house is sometimes unavoidable, so Summit Builders always take necessary precautions to your protect your walls, flooring and furniture. We always clean up thoroughly at the end of each day and create as little disruption to the rest of your home as possible.
